****REPOSTED FROM THE LATE LATE SHOW
WITH NEW EDITS AND COMMENTS****
Lame and uninspired, this failed to
capture the essence, or the flaws, of the genre it was attempting to spoof.
Despite what was a fairly decent
cast, Date Movie has failed in the way that most of these spoofs since Scary
Movie have failed. Instead of taking a formulaic concept and spinning it to
point out the silliness involved, the film makers have attempted to follow a
mashed up story line involving one or more plots from recent well-known
romantic comedies while "adding" content to them in the form of
random copycatted scenes from commercials, television shows, and other popular
movies.
While the premise on these is ALWAYS
sound, the tendency to cram 10 pounds of stuff into a 5 pound sack ruins
anything truly funny. For some reason, the Wayans Brothers and their ilk seemed
to have an understanding of this in Scary Movie, but forgot it soon
after.
Like most of these, just save
yourself an hour and watch a few of the trailers. You'll see everything of
merit in those.
